This picture of the famous Széchenyi Chain Bridge in the capital of Hungary, Budapest, was taken during a visit in November. The days were short, grey and our moods were dampened by the endless rain and the thick fog, which laid over the land like a fluffy blanket. The usually very busy roads in the centre of Budapest were literally empty, which helped emphasize the dark and mystical atmosphere of this very beautiful scene. It was almost like a Budapest from the past showed its face for a few short moments.
The connection between the two cities Buda and Pest
The Chain Bridge is one of the most famous buildings in Budapest. The original bridge was built between 1839 and 1849, after the Hungarian Earl Széchenyi encouraged the design and construction of same. It was the only connection between the two cities Buda and Pest, which have been separated by the Danube up until then. The Széchenyi Chain Bridge quickly became one of the busiest roads and over the years has been extended and equipped for the ever-growing volume of traffic. At the end of World War II it was blown up by the German Army. However, it was rebuilt to the bridge we all know and love today within four years and reopened for traffic on the 100th anniversary of its original opening.
