Regensburg by Kayak | Germany

Regensburg and Danube River with Kayak
Regensburg with the Stone Bridge arching over the Danube River. The Kayak is a Wildwater canoeist at practice.

What’s your favourite way to explore a new city? By foot? By bike? Hop-on, Hop-off bus? How about using a Kayak?

Kidding aside, I was impressed when I saw this guy taking on the Danube river in Regensburg in his small Kayak. The currents around the Stone Bridge are vicious. I could see him struggling.

Additionally, the sky started to darken, making me think a storm might be coming. Indeed, I would not want to be on the water when that happens.

But as it turns out, the south of Germany is known for breeding top-class athletes for Wildwater canoeing. No surprise if you have such training conditions in your backyard.

To capture this scene with the Kayak on the Danube river and Regensburg in the background, I needed to increase my ISO a bit. No need to have a tripod if you want to capture a fast-moving athlete. It’s all about quick shutter speed while still getting in enough light. ISO 250, f/5.0, and 14mm wide-angle did the trick for me. To get enough light, I just had to expose the image for 1/200 of a second, quick enough to freeze the canoeist in motion.
