Wieskirche or The Pilgrimage Church of Wies is still not typically a touristic attraction in Bavaria. It remotely stands at the feet of the Alps and is a UNESCO World Heritage, which I liked the most – with a background story but still undiscovered by photographers.
We visited Wieskirche on our way to Schwangau during our road-trip through Bavaria and Italy. I wanted to photograph this church first from the outside with the majestic Alps in the background. When we reached it, we thought that it would be better to wait for the softer afternoon sun. We then, wandered around the church (there were actually chickens on the paths) and finally went inside.
What I saw inside was spellbinding…
The interior and the celling were unlike anything I would expect from a typical church. There were bright and abundant colours, completely hypnotising. It wasn’t just rococo style; the artists who made the sculptures and paintings were from an 18th century Wessobrunner School. Their work was dedicated to show divineness in natural form. I just couldn’t imagine how to reach this purpose better…
