Het probleem is dat er meestal veel bezoekers rond het fort lopen die in Nico\u2019s beeld komen. De beste tijd van het jaar om het fort van S\u00e3o Jo\u00e3o Baptista te bezoeken is dus de winter. De kunst is om ervoor te zorgen dat het weer in dit deel van <a href=\"https:\/\/sumfinity.com\/portfolio\/portugal\/?envira_id=27540&#038;page=1\">Portugal<\/a> meewerkt en dat de zee niet te ruw is. Op deze dag in januari hadden we echter geluk en was de boottocht naar Berlengas mogelijk en zelfs heel leuk.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Fort Berlengas ligt in de gemeente Peniche, in de regio Oeste in Portugal. Koning Manuel van Portugal gaf in 1502 opdracht tot de bouw van het eerste fort. In de 16e eeuw was het fort de thuisbasis van de Hieronymietenorde, maar later werd het door hen verlaten. Ondanks hun ideale afzondering van de buitenwereld werden de monniken op Berlengas voortdurend lastiggevallen door piraten. Het fort van Berlengas raakte vervolgens in verval, totdat het in de 17e eeuw weer werd herbouwd. Berlengas werd toen een belangrijk verdedigingspunt voor Portugal tegen aanvallen van het Spaanse leger.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 1953 werd het fort van Berlengas opnieuw herbouwd, maar met een ander doel&#8230; Tegenwoordig is het fort van Berlengas een herberg. Je kunt er zelfs overnachten, naar verluidt voor slechts 10 euro per nacht! Helaas was deze herberg in de winter gesloten. Nico en ik vroegen ons echter af hoe het zou zijn om na zonsondergang op het eiland te verblijven. Er staan misschien maar een handvol huizen op het eiland, naast het fort. Over het algemeen lijkt Berlengas alleen bewoond te worden door een paar miljoen meeuwen.
