De Bebelplatz is een van de grootste en bekendste pleinen van Berlijn<\/a>. Het ligt vlak bij Unter den Linden. Tot 1910 heette het Platz am Opernhaus (het plein bij de Opera) en tussen 1910 en 1947 Kaiser-Franz-Joseph-Platz. Hoewel je het op de foto niet kunt zien, staat er een heel interessant monument op dit plein.<\/p>\n

Monumenten op de Bebelplatz<\/strong><\/p>\n

Een van de belangrijkste gebouwen in de buurt van Bebelplatz is de Humboldt-Universiteit. Het plein wordt ook omringd door de Berlijnse Staatsopera (Staatsoper Unter den Linden) en de St. Hedwigskathedraal. Toen ik deze plek voor het eerst zag, was ik echter het meest onder de indruk van het monument, dat op het eerste gezicht niet te zien is.<\/p>\n

Als je te voet over de Bebelplatz loopt en onder je voeten kijkt, zie je op een gegeven moment een 'raam'. Daardoor zie je een lege ruimte zonder deuren met witte, lege boekenplanken. Dit monument, "De lege bibliotheek", herdenkt de boekverbranding door de nazi's op 10 mei 1933 in veel universiteitssteden in Duitsland. De inscriptie op het monument citeert Heinrich Heine: "Dat was slechts een opmaat; waar ze boeken verbranden, zullen ze uiteindelijk ook mensen verbranden."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
