In het Victoriaanse tijdperk stonden hier de grootste pakhuizen van Londen. Na verloop van tijd raakte deze buurt echter in verval. Tot in de jaren 80, toen de voormalige pakhuizen werden omgebouwd tot luxeappartementen.<\/p>\n<p>De naam &quot;Shad&quot; is niet helemaal duidelijk. Een theorie is dat het afkomstig is van de afkorting van &quot;St John-at-Thames&quot;, de naam van een kerk die vlakbij deze straat stond. De andere theorie zegt dat de naam afkomstig is van de naam van de vis die in de Theems voorkomt.<\/p>\n<p>In de Victoriaanse tijd stonden hier de grootste pakhuizen van Londen. Hier werden goederen zoals thee, koffie en specerijen uit verre landen uit de schepen gelost. Zelfs vandaag de dag dragen sommige gebouwen nog steeds de namen van de producten die in de oude pakhuizen werden opgeslagen, zoals &quot;Vanilla and Sesame&quot;, &quot;Cayenne&quot; en &quot;Tea Trade Wharf&quot;. Naar verluidt konden de eerste huurders, toen de pakhuizen werden omgebouwd tot appartementen, nog steeds de geur van de specerijen ruiken die uit de eeuwenoude muren kwam.
