Hoewel er in Montreal en Chicago getrouwe kopie\u00ebn van dit monument staan, is het monument voor het Staszic-paleis misschien wel het monument met de meest bewogen geschiedenis.<\/p>\n<h2>Copernicus-monument<\/h2>\n<p>Het monument voor Nicolaus Copernicus is opgericht op initiatief van de wetenschapper en filosoof Stanis\u0142aw Staszic. Volgens een van de verhalen zou het monument oorspronkelijk in Toru\u0144 komen te staan. Het idee ontstond nadat Staszic had gehoord dat Napoleon Bonaparte verbaasd was dat Toru\u0144 nog geen standbeeld van Copernicus had (hij was daar geboren). De delingen van Polen en de annexatie van Toru\u0144 door Pruisen gooiden roet in het eten en uiteindelijk werd het monument in <a href=\"https:\/\/sumfinity.com\/nl\/travel\/warschau\/\">Warschau<\/a> opgericht.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Een ander verhaal over het monument <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nicolaus_Copernicus\">voor Nicolaus Copernicus<\/a> in Warschau vertelt hoe de geestelijken weigerden mee te werken aan de onthulling van het monument. Waarom? Omdat het boek dat Copernicus had gepubliceerd destijds door Rome was veroordeeld en op de lijst van verboden boeken was geplaatst.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Het monument voor Nicolaus Copernicus werd tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog ook een twistpunt tussen het Poolse verzet en de Duitse bezetters. Oorspronkelijk waren er twee plaquettes aan het monument bevestigd, met inscripties in het Latijn: \u201eAan Nicolaus Copernicus, van het dankbare vaderland\u201d en in het Pools: \u201eAan Nicolaus Copernicus, van de landgenoten\u201d. Deze plaquettes werden verwijderd en vervangen door Duitse inscripties. Twee jaar later, op 11 februari 1942, haalde Maciej Aleksy Dawidowski &quot;Alek&quot; van de organisatie voor kleine sabotage &quot;Wawer&quot; de nieuwe plaquettes weg en verstopte ze. Na de Opstand van Warschau werd het monument gedeeltelijk vernield en uit Warschau weggehaald.
