We zijn gewend om dit paleis in Warschau<\/a> \u2018het presidenti\u00eble paleis\u2019 te noemen, maar het is pas sinds 1994 de zetel van de Poolse presidenten. Dit grootste paleis van Warschau heette vroeger ook wel: het Koniecpolski-paleis, het Radziwill-paleis, het Lubomirski-paleis, het Namiestnikowski-paleis en het paleis van de Raad van Ministers.<\/p>\n

De Poolse adel<\/h2>\n

De bouw van dit barokke gebouw begon in 1643 in opdracht van grootkroonhetman Stanis\u0142aw Koniecpolski<\/a>. Na zijn dood ging het paleis van de ene naar de andere vertegenwoordiger van de Poolse adel. Het was een plek voor openbare bijeenkomsten, feesten, bals, theatervoorstellingen en opera. Hier werden ook de vergaderingen gehouden van de delegatie die het verdrag over de eerste deling van Polen voorbereidde. Tijdens de opstand van Ko\u015bciuszko was hier een militair hospitaal gevestigd, en op 24 februari 1818 vond hier het eerste openbare concert plaats van Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Chopin, die toen nog maar 8 jaar oud was.<\/p>\n

Aan het begin van de 19e eeuw werd het paleis gekocht door de regering van het Koninkrijk Polen en herbouwd in classicistische stijl (deze stijl is tot op de dag van vandaag bewaard gebleven). Verrassend genoeg heeft het paleis de Tweede Wereldoorlog grotendeels onbeschadigd doorstaan. Het standbeeld van prins Jozef Poniatowski heeft in die tijd echter wel schade opgelopen; pas in 1965 werd er een kopie voor het gebouw geplaatst. Hier vonden de onderhandelingen van de Ronde Tafel plaats, waarna Polen zijn democratische onafhankelijkheid terugkreeg.<\/p>\n

Het is onmogelijk om de geschiedenis van het presidentieel paleis in het kort samen te vatten \u2013 het belang en de functies ervan waren zo groot voor Polen dat we je alleen maar kunnen verwijzen naar een uitgebreidere beschrijving van de geschiedenis van dit gebouw. Hier vonden enkele van de belangrijkste culturele gebeurtenissen plaats die van groot belang waren voor de natie.
