Deze kruiskoepelvormige orthodoxe basiliek<\/a> was een van de monumenten die in eerste instantie mijn interesse in fotografie aanwakkerden en natuurlijk kreeg ik uiteindelijk het verlangen om Sofia te bezoeken. De Alexander Nevski Kathedraal in de hoofdstad van Bulgarije is een van de grootste oosters-orthodoxe kerken ter wereld en bevat verschillende architectonische elementen uit heel Europa. <\/p>

Een van de mooiste vertegenwoordigers van de neo-byzantijnse architectuur<\/h2>

Vaak dacht ik bij het kiezen van een fotolocatie voor mijn volgende reis aan de Zuid- en Oost-Europese landen. Ze hebben zoveel te bieden en ik geloof nog steeds dat ze nog niet ontdekt zijn door de fotografiegemeenschap. Een blik op Google-afbeeldingen van Sofia, Bulgarije, overtuigde me ervan dat er zoveel mogelijkheden waren om de stad te fotograferen. <\/p>

De Sint Alexander Nevski Kathedraal staat in het hart van Sofia. Toen wij er waren, was het een zonnige herfstdag en er was nauwelijks verkeer op de grote pleinen en in de straten rondom de kerk. Ik kon gemakkelijk midden in een steegje gaan staan om de zijkant van de kathedraal vast te leggen. De zon weerspiegelde al in een gouden decor, dat weldra achter de bergen rond de stad zou ondergaan. Vanuit het naburige caf\u00e9 klonk gezellige muziek die me in de oren klonk en terwijl ik wachtte op een foto, kon ik mijn blik niet stoppen in bewondering voor de vormgeving van de basiliek. <\/p>

Ik heb de byzantijnse en neo-byzantijnse architectuur altijd bewonderd. Het heeft iets unieks… iets onafhankelijks, naar mijn mening. De kathedraal van Sofia is een van de mooiste vertegenwoordigers van de neo-byzantijnse architectuur, die aan het eind van de 19e en het begin van de 20e eeuw de meest populaire stijl was in Oosters-orthodoxe landen. Een voorbeeld van deze bouwstijl is te zien op eerdere foto’s van de kathedraal in Podgorica<\/a>. <\/p>

De Alexander Nevski Kathedraal in Sofia werd voornamelijk gebouwd in 1904 en 1912. Wat ik fascinerend vond, was dat sommige elementen van deze orthodoxe kerk in mijn thuisland werden gemaakt. De verlichtingsarmaturen werden gemaakt in M\u00fcnchen<\/g>, de elementen van de poort werden gemaakt in Berlijn<\/a><\/g> en de hele constructie van de poort vond plaats in Wenen<\/g>. De moza\u00efeken werden echter in Veneti\u00eb<\/a> gemaakt. Het samenvoegen van zoveel elementen uit verschillende landen in de kathedraal van Sofia werd naar mijn mening een symbolische vereniging tussen de verschillende Europese culturen. <\/p>

Het blijkt dat alle Oosters-orthodoxe kerken de Christus Pantokrator in de centrale koepel hebben en een ander voorbeeld hiervan is de kerk van het Rilaklooster en zijn fresco’s.<\/a><\/p>
