We hebben deze Grieks-orthodoxe kerk gevonden dankzij een app die ons door de stad leidde en ons hielp om ook veel andere bezienswaardigheden in Thessaloniki te ontdekken. De kerk van Panagia Chalkeon ligt aan het Dikastirion-plein, vlak bij de Aristoteleslaan \u2013 de buurt waar we een appartement hadden gehuurd voor ons bezoek aan Thessaloniki, Griekenland<\/a>.<\/p>\n

De kerk van Panagia Chalkeon <\/strong><\/p>\n

Deze kerk in Thessaloniki is gebouwd in de 11e eeuw en heeft de voor de regio typische Macedonische bouwstijl. De lokale bevolking noemt haar \u2018de Rode Kerk\u2019 omdat het hele gebouw uit bakstenen bestaat.<\/p>\n

Ons bezoek aan Thessaloniki, Griekenland<\/strong><\/p>\n

Degenen onder jullie die al eens in de op \u00e9\u00e9n na grootste stad van Griekenland zijn geweest, hebben vast wel gemerkt dat zulke sierlijke Grieks-orthodoxe kerken plotseling voor je neus opduiken, vaak op verrassende plekken. Thessaloniki<\/a>, gesticht in de 3e eeuw v.Chr., is tegenwoordig een mix van oude geschiedenis en economische en politieke macht.<\/p>\n

Als je naar deze foto kijkt, kun je je dan de kerk van Panagia Chalkeon voorstellen, omringd door flatgebouwen in communistische stijl? Ik ook niet. Toch was dat de realiteit, en dat maakte het voor mij een uitdaging om de schoonheid ervan vast te leggen.
