In Campo Maior kun je op dit moment een van de zeldzaamste tradities van Portugal meemaken. Tijdens de Festas do Povo versiert de hele stad zichzelf: elke straat wordt met de hand versierd met papieren bloemen, honderdduizenden stuks, die maandenlang zijn gevouwen door de mensen die in die straat wonen. Het ontwerp wordt geheim gehouden tot de avond voor de start van het festival, zodat niemand een straat ziet voordat die helemaal af is.<\/p>

Het festival heeft geen vaste datum. Het vindt plaats wanneer de inwoners van Campo Maior dat besluiten, en de laatste editie was elf jaar geleden. Dat is precies waarom UNESCO het in 2021 heeft opgenomen op de Representatieve Lijst van het Immaterieel Cultureel Erfgoed van de Mensheid, als de gemeenschapsfeesten in Campo Maior. Dit is een levende traditie die door de stad zelf wordt georganiseerd, geen gepland evenement op een toeristische kalender.<\/p>

Hier zie je de Rua Capit\u00e3o Manuel Ant\u00f3nio Vieira tijdens de Festas do Povo 2026, met de straat nog helemaal leeg en de luifel die over de hele lengte loopt, terwijl de roze kleur boven je hoofd steeds intenser wordt en overgaat in wit aan het einde van de straat.
