Symi ligt ten noordwesten van Rhodos, vlak bij de Turkse zeegrens, en de overtocht duurt tussen de 50 minuten en anderhalf uur, afhankelijk van de maatschappij en de route.<\/p><p>Na daar een dag doorgebracht te hebben, wilde ik deze foto van het havenpanorama van Symi en een paar van de verbazingwekkende weetjes die ik over het eiland ontdekte heel graag met je delen.<\/p><h2>Een heel kleurrijk klein eilandje<\/h2><p>We vonden Symi een schattig eilandje, met al die pastelkleurige gebouwen en dat prachtige water. Op deze foto wilde ik het levendige blauw van zowel de lucht als de zee vastleggen, waarbij de pastelkleurige architectuur contrasteert met de weelderige kleuren van het water.<\/p><p>We hadden het geluk dat er ook wat wolken aan de hemel hingen, wat bijdroeg aan de dromerige sfeer van de plek \u2013 precies zoals ik me de foto van het panorama van de haven van Symi had voorgesteld.<\/p><p>Symi is een heel klein eiland. Ik ben benieuwd hoe het zou zijn om hier echt een nachtje te blijven, want ik denk dat het, als de dagtoeristen eenmaal weg zijn, een heel rustige plek is. In tegenstelling tot grotere Griekse eilanden die gedomineerd worden door resorts, voelt Symi veel intiemer aan.<\/p><h2>Vier dingen die me verbaasden aan het eiland Symi<\/h2><ul><li>Het panorama van de haven van Symi wordt gekenmerkt door een heel eigen, neoklassieke architectuur, met veel symmetrische gevels die in pasteltinten zijn geschilderd. Het verschilt fundamenteel van de architectuur in populaire Griekse bestemmingen zoals <a href=\"https:\/\/sumfinity.com\/nl\/fotos\/griekenland\/athene\/athens-greek-capital-panorama\/\">Athene<\/a> en <a href=\"https:\/\/sumfinity.com\/nl\/fotos\/griekenland\/thessaloniki-nl\/thessaloniki-white-tower-national-theater\/\">Thessaloniki<\/a>.<\/li><li>Wat ik voor mijn bezoek niet wist, is hoezeer het eiland is gevormd door een bijzondere activiteit: sponsduiken. Het lijkt erop dat het eiland hierdoor bekend is geworden, en de lokale bevolking heeft er zelfs baanbrekende technieken voor ontwikkeld. Er zijn nog steeds een of twee winkeltjes die de sponzen verkopen, en we hebben er daar zelfs zelf een gekocht. Het is echt een belangrijk onderdeel van het leven op het eiland.<\/li><li>Symi heeft een relatief kleine vaste bevolking, maar tijdens het toeristenseizoen neemt het aantal bezoekers enorm toe, vooral door dagtochten vanuit Rhodos en reizigers die over de Ege\u00efsche Zee varen.<\/li><li>Door de strategische ligging in de Ege\u00efsche Zee heeft het eiland ook verschillende periodes van buitenlandse overheersing doorgemaakt en werd het tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog zelfs een belangrijke militaire locatie.
