In tegenstelling tot andere steden in Portugal, waar de architectuur vooral barok is, is de architectuur van <a href=\"https:\/\/sumfinity.com\/nl\/travel\/haven\/\">Porto<\/a> eerder monumentaal en wordt deze gedomineerd door granieten gebouwen.<\/p>\n<h2>Pal\u00e1cio das Cardosas of het Intercontinental Hotel<\/h2>\n<p>Een mooi voorbeeld van de architectuurstijl van de stad is het Pal\u00e1cio das Cardosas. Het wordt tegenwoordig gebruikt als Intercontinental-hotel. Het Pal\u00e1cio das Cardosas werd in de 19<sup>e<\/sup> eeuw gebouwd in het zuidelijke deel van het Pra\u00e7a da Liberdade. Je zult het zeker zien als je de beroemde Avenida dos Aliados bezoekt. Deze straat vormt het kloppende hart van <a href=\"https:\/\/sumfinity.com\/nl\/fotos\/portugal-nl\/\">Porto<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Het Intercontinental-hotel stond er niet vanaf het begin. Het paleis werd in de eerste helft van de 19e eeuw gebouwd als klooster voor <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saint_Eligius\">de broeders van<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saint_Eligius\">Santo El\u00f3i<\/a>. Nadat de monniken gedwongen waren de stad te verlaten, kocht de koopman Manuel Cardoso dos Santos het pand en vernoemde het naar zichzelf. Daarom werd het Pal\u00e1cio das Cardosas in 2011 door de InterContinental Hotels Group omgebouwd tot een hotel.<\/p>\n<p>De gevel van het hotel heeft een rustieke stijl. Toen we in Porto waren, was hij nog verlicht met kerstverlichting. Die combinatie van monumentale architectuur met verfijnde details maakte behoorlijk indruk. De volgende keer dat we in Porto zijn, blijven we een dag of twee in dit hotel om ook het interieur te bekijken.
