Punta della Dogana overlooking San Marco in Venice, Italy

Punta della Dogana is home to a contemporary art gallery in Venice. The building itself – Dogana da Mar – was formerly a maritime customs office. Today’s gallery has been hosted here since 2009 and is part of the Palazzo Grassi contemporary art museum in Venice.

Dogana

The Punta della Dogana was built between 1678 and 1682 on the site of a former defensive tower. It has a triangular shape with sides extending along the Canal Grande and Canale della Guidecca. Twenty monumental ornamented doors were built into these walls, which give the building its peculiar character.

Although this side of the building, seen in the picture, is less ornamental, from this perspective one can admire the view of San Marco. This picture was taken just after sunrise when the rays of sunlight gilded the facade of the building.
