La Melanchthonhaus de Lutherstadt Wittenberg, avec ses pignons à larges pans sur le côté gauche, est l’un des nombreux sites du patrimoine mondial de la région. Philipp Melanchthon a vécu et travaillé dans cette maison de ville au 16e siècle.

On peut voir en Melanchthon un réformateur du système éducatif de la même manière qu’on voit en Martin Luther un réformateur de l’Église. Il était, pour ainsi dire, un humaniste opposé, ce qui ne signifie pas que Luther et Melanchthon ont travaillé l’un contre l’autre. Au contraire, lorsque Luther a traduit le Nouveau Testament, c’est Melanchthon qui a corrigé son travail.
