Tradition and Modernity | Berlin, Germany

,
Reichstag building and Paul-Löbe-Haus in Berlin. Government district on the river Spree in an HDR photo.

You can think about the German government whatever you want. But when it comes to the government district it has to be appreciated as a flagship for modern architecture in Berlin. The district is still not completed; right now they again add some new buildings.

Inevitably this leads to a strong contrast with the just 10 year old Paul-Löbe-Haus on the one side and the historical Reichstag building on the other. Now, one can argue whether that combination of tradition and modernity is a harmonious blend or not. I think it is and that’s why the way along the river spree through the government district is one of my favorite places in Berlin.

Workflow: As often, to get this photo you have to get up early. During the day there are too many ships on the Spree and during sunset the light is not as good. Well, in winter you don’t have to get up that early, but it’s cold.

To get all the exposures I needed, I had to wait for 7 minutes of exposure time in total. It was so cold; the people passing gave me strange looks as they saw me walking up and down cursing.

In the post-processing there was not so much that needed to be done. The one thing that was really necessary was to replace the flags on the Reichstag building by a photo with shorter exposure time as the flags fluttered in the wind for minutes.

Sumfinity.com presents the hub for my works. I write about my impressions on my trips and during taking the photos. I try to provide you with insight into my artistic life, but the focus is always with the pictures. It fills me with pride when I see that my photos are sometimes viewed by approximately 150,000 people within 24 hours. I imagine that I can give all those people at least two seconds of pure pleasure. That’s 80 hours of happiness! In a world which is dominated by sad, upsetting and dismaying news, I’m so glad to be able to create a small counterpart.
